Bologna – The Magical City

Italy happens to be one of those countries of the world that has a lot of small old cities, all of which reflect a deep sense of vibrant culture in it along with a great history and marvellous architecture. Bologna happens to be one such city, which has all these wonderful features and a lot more.Till date, Bologna is considered to be one of the most attractive and enchanting cities of Europe, and the reason behind this is the magical blend of the old world charm of the city along with the current modern life. Bologna is also home to one of the oldest universities of Europe, which is around 1000 years old. Thanks to this, Bologna is famous for its vibrant community of students who study at the university.

Also famous in Bologna are the tortellinis, which are small pasta sculptures filled with meat, and are found only here and nowhere else in the world. Then there are the Asinelli and Garisenda Towers which are highly popular among tourists and visitors. The towers are actually symbolic of the aristocratic power and wealth, of the Bolognese nobility who had ruled the region long back, some eight hundred years ago.

Earlier, there were some 200 towers like these, but with time most of them have been ruined, and only 20 exist as of now. The Asinelli and Garisenda towers are a magnificent sight, and are beautiful sky scrapers built of steel, concrete and glass.

The city of Bologna has great medieval touch to it, and the best way of exploring it and enjoying it completely is on foot. The famous porticoes of Bologna are lined up on the narrow streets and have a great welcoming feel to them, as if guards to a royal entrance. There is a wide range of cafes, restaurants and bars in the streets of Bologna that keep the city active.

Piazzas are a common feature in all ancient Italian cities, and so is the case with Bologna too. Piazza Maggiore is famous for its Romanesque and Gothic style architecture, and the famous 16th century Neptune fountain, along with a grand basilica and art gallery.

The Palazzo del Commune built during the 13th and the 14th century is currently used as the Town Hall, and has three fantastic art works for the visitors to see. San Petronio Church is again a beautiful site, and is a must watch for tourists. Shopping, night life, eating, and the hotels in Bologna are all simply great.

Being in Bologna is almost like being a part of some magnificent chapter of history by enjoying the great architecture and old world charm, while at the same time having access to the best of modern world facilities and amenities.
