By on May 25, 2010

Chiang Mai is the capital of North Thailand and an important town in the country. The term ‘Chiang Mai’ means ‘new city’. It is a bustling city and an ideal place to go on tour to see the surrounding the hill tribes.

The city does offer lots for the younger generation and you will never find a dull moment here. The city has shed some of its ancient image and is now more modernized and there is an urban look to the city. However, inspite of the rapid urbanization the city does manage to retain some of its old charm.

Chiang Mai comes only second to Bangkok in terms of popularity among the travelers. While Bangkok maintains a frantic pace of life, the lifestyle and atmosphere in Chiang Mai is much more composed and less ‘crowded’. Some of the areas in Chiang Mai have retained some of its old world charm and you can see the wooden houses and the lush gardens.

Chiang Mai was once famous for silk, timber and opium. But now it is a premier tourist destination and also the gateway to explore Laos and Myanmar. The temples in the city of Chiang Mai are hugely popular and are a top draw among tourists.

The temples sometimes serve as good community centers. But that is not all to Chiang Mai. You will get some mind-blowing cuisine, cultural and spiritual learning, good nightclubs, value for money accommodation and a highly profitable craft industry, Most of the travelers come here for a short stay but they end up staying for more days as it is nearly impossible to get away from this enchanting city.

Transport

The town is quite compact and don’t be surprised if you see tourist walking from one temple to another or from one sight to another. But if you know how to ride a bicycle then things will be quicker for you. There is an air conditioned bus system in the city which has already started and the fare is calculated depending upon the destination.

Metered taxis are always there which can be booked over the telephone or can be flagged down. Apart from these, you will also see Songthaews and tricycle rickshaws.
