Gonder or Gondar is an imperial city of medieval period made famous by its palaces resembling castles. Founded by Emperor Fasiladas in 1636, Gonder Ethiopia rose to prominence in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its agricultural and commercial prosperity earned it the title of ‘Camelot of the East’.
Gonder Ethiopia located on the banks of River Lesser Angereb is at a height of about 7250 feet. Nestling in the base of Simien Mountains, this medieval town is situated about 20 miles north of Lake Tana. This historic capital of Ethiopia in 17th century was among the most populous cities of the world.
Under orders from Emperor Yohannes I, Amharic speaking Ethiopian orthodox Christians were segregated from the Muslim residents who established their own town Addis Alem. After the capital of Ethiopia was shifted to Magadala by Tewodros II, Gonder was plundered and ravaged in the sixth decade of 19th century. Later Benito Mussolini occupied Gonder in Ethiopia between 1936 and 1941.
Gonder today is famed for its historic palaces and fabled ruins. The most impressive among these is the Royal Enclosure which comprises five medieval castles.
The earliest among these is the Castle of Fasilades which is a magnificent blend of Indian, Moorish, Portuguese, and Askumite architectural patterns. The impressive castle reaches up to a height of 32m with four domes.
Iyasu Palace is the largest edifice within the Royal Enclosure. This palace in the shape of a saddle was the home of Iyasu 1, considered to be the greatest ruler of Gonder. The interior is richly decorated with ivory, gold leaf, and gilded chairs and mirrors. The Mentwabs Palace or Kusquwam is another impressive structure built by Empress Mentwab around 1730.
Debre Birhan Selassie Church resembles a fortress more than a religious place. This church guarded by twelve towers, each representing the apostles, was built in this manner to thwart Sudanese attacks.
This church is famous for its intricately painted angels on its ceiling. Lying about 2km North West is Fasilidas Bath made famous by Fasilidas as well as Iyasu 1. This site has been restored by Norway government.
Gonder in Ethiopia might be reached by flights from Addis Ababa, Lalibela, Bahir Dar, and Axum. Bus services are also available to and from these cities to Gonder.
