Those familiar with Greek mythology may remember Ithaca as the island, which was the home of Odysseus. In Central New York, the city of Ithaca that was named after the famous Greek island is a charming place for a visit. It is well known as being the home of renowned Ivy League University, Cornell. Ithaca is situated at the southern end of the Cayuga Lake; natural beauty abounds here especially in the form of waterfalls and gorges.
There’s no denying that the major attraction in this city is Cornell University. A trip here needs to include other sights too as each one contributes towards making Ithaca the wonderful place it is.
Cornell University
One may start their tour of Ithaca by visiting Cornell; this university is built on a hill. It is part of the Ivy League System and thus very exclusive. The views from this college building are magnificent – Cayuga Lake spins its way far below the hill. One can also see the Fall Creek Gorge, one of the gorges in between which lies Ithaca city.
Visitors to the university can also spend time in the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art on campus. Works by artists from varied backgrounds are on exhibition here.
Robert H. Treman State Park
A great spot for picnics, camps and hikes, this park has many trails for enthusiastic walkers. Except in winter when snowfall blocks most of the trails, hiking in Robert H. Treman State Park is a pleasurable experience as it offers splendid views of the stunning natural beauties of Ithaca. The park also has many waterfalls such as the Lucifer Falls and Lower Falls.
Ithaca College
Ithaca is a private college in Ithaca city and is famous for its communications program. While there are few graduate programs, mainly the college has a strong foundation of liberal arts. It is located on the South Hill and its scenery includes the beautiful waterfalls and gorges of Ithaca.
Ithaca Commons
For a delightful shopping adventure, visit Ithaca Commons in downtown Ithaca. There are many shops and galleries here as well as entertainers during summer. The Ithaca Festival held in summer is the most important one; it takes place in the Commons for two days.
Ithaca is not just for students and studies; it offers opportunities for enjoyment to everyone.
