The first and foremost attraction of Jaisalmer of India is the famous Jaisalmer Fort. The Jaisalmer is famously known as the ‘golden fort’ as it looks like a fort made of gold. The fort is walled by great walls and 25% of the population of the old city of Jaisalmer resides within the walls of the fort. The walled fort is an interesting place. There is a huge golden sandstone palace, several beautiful temples and loads of shops, houses, and the whole area is crisscrossed by narrow lanes. All the lanes are paved with stones.
The Jaisalmer Fort has a fascinating history. It was built by the Rajput ruler Jaisala in the year 1156. After its making this massive fort took an important part in several battles of Indian histories. In the decisive battles between the Bhattis, the great Mughals and the Rathores of Jodhpur, the great posed an important part. The fort is situated on the Trikuta Hill. The lower portion of the walls of the fort is made of solid stone. Apart from the outer wall there are another two walls.
The second and third walls saved this fort from the attacks of the enemies. From the fort walls one can have fantastic views of the city and the surrounding desert area. The design of the fort and its area is like a great maze. There are at least seven Jain temples within the walls of the fort.
All the temples are interconnected and they themselves have created a nice maze. All the temples are made of beautiful yellow sand stone.
The carvings and intricate designs of the walls of the temples are extraordinary. The first temple is Chandraprabhu, the next one is Parasnath Temple and another temple is Rikhabdev Temple. There are at least 108 marble images of Parasnath in the temples. After crossing several grand gates of the fort one will reach the massive courtyard of the great palace. The Maharaja’s Palace is a seven-storey palace. The great palace is really elegant and it charms the travellers. Some parts of the palace are open to the visiting public and it is really a visual treat to visit this great golden palace.
