The town of Paro is situated on the banks of the river Paro Chhu. The main thing that strikes one just entering the charming valley of Paro is its noiselessness. The peaceful and serene ambience of the whole area soothes one’s mind and heart. One is bound to fall in love with this beautiful small town at the first sight. Paro is generally considered as one of the most visited places of Bhutan.
The high sombre Himalayan ranges with the snow capped peaks, the green paddy fields, the willow trees, the flowing river and many other things have made Paro a slice of heaven on earth. Coming here you will not be disturbed by constant honks of horns and other mundane sounds, rather chirping of birds and gurgling river will soothe your ears. It is a kind of treat to your mind and heart visiting this beautiful destination of Bhutan.
Attractions: There are some important things to see in Paro of Bhutan. One of the most important things to see here is the famous Paro Dzong. Paro Dzong is considered as one of the most famous and most beautiful dzongs of Bhutan. The location of the Dzong has enhanced its beauty. The grand buttressed walls are generally visible from different parts of Paro town. The massive structure of Paro Dzong dominates the whole serene valley.
The actual name of the dzong is Rinchen Pung Dzong or Rinpung Dzong. The meaning of the name is ‘fortress on a heap of jewels’. It was started in the year 1644. Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal started making this dzong. This massive dzong was built on the main foundation of a small monastery of Guru Rinpoche.
It is said that this massive fortress several times in ancient days saved Paro valley from the brutal invasions of Tibet. Another interesting thing to see in Paro is the Ugyen Pelri Thang. This is located at the western side of the dzong and on the south part of the river. This is actually a small nice palace which is situated in a wooded compound.
The palace was built in the early 1900s. It was built by Tshering Penjor. This palace is not open to the public because this is now treated as the residence of the queen mother. One can get fantastic view of the dzong from the palace compound and can take great snaps from here.
The road that leads upto the palace is decorated with chortens. It is said that these chortens were built in the memory of the late first King. Dumtse Lhakhang is another beautiful temple of Paro. It looks like a large chorten though it is not. A trip to Bhutan is really extraordinary and exciting.
