Maui is an ideal holiday destination. This scenic tropical island framed by lush rainforests and heavenly beaches is one of the most popular islands in Hawaii. This picturesque island has been named after Maui, a demigod, who according to local legend dragged the Hawaii islands from the bottom of the sea.
Haleakala National Park
The demigod of the Hawaiian legend is even credited to have tied the sun to the peak of the Haleakala, the tallest mountain of the region. The natural reserve centered on Haleakala is the most popular attraction of Maui.
In the dawn, visitors flock to the summit of Haleakala to watch the sunrise, a natural splendor that lingers in the memory for years. The ‘house of the sun’ is home to several rare flora and fauna.
While exploring the tropical forest, interspersed with streams and waterfalls, you can catch a glimpse of the Nene, the rare Hawaiian goose, which is also the state bird of Hawaii.
Haleakala has a number of scenic hiking trails. On the outskirts of the park is located the Pools of Oheo. In the Kipahulu area of the Park, you can follow the Pipiwai Trail to reach the gushing 400-foot high Waimoku Falls.
Hana
The peaceful Hawaiian town of Hana is a 10 miles drive from the Haleakala National Park. Located on the eastern coast of Maui, it is one of the romantic escapades in Maui.
You can sunbath at the Hana Beach Park and swim or snorkel in the waters surrounding the black sand beach of Waianapanapa State Park or the Kaihalulu beach covered by red sand. If you are willing to give a spiritual touch to your Maui vacation, pay a visit to Hale Piilani, the largest Hawaiian temple in the region.
Lahaina
The former capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Lahaina, is a historic town. In the 19th century, Lahaina was a whaling hotspot in Hawaii. Nowadays, this historic Hawaiian city is the most popular whale watching spots in the Pacific.
While walking along the Lahaina Historic Trail, you can visit historical sites of the city such as the infamous Lahaina Prison or Hale Paaho, US Seamen’s Hospital, Lahaina Jodo Mission, the Banyan Tree and the Wo Hing Temple.
And to satisfy the epicurean in you, don’t miss the seaside restaurants of Lahaina, noted for serving Hawiian delicacies.
