After the establishment of a French trading post some 200 years ago and the discovery of sulfur springs and salt licks in this area in Indiana, people began to flock this place and their number began to rise gradually. The only thing they intended to do then was to bathe and drink the local mineral water which was believed to contain healing powers.
Things To Do In French Lick Indiana
Amazing French Lick
A lot of things have happened since then and the obscure French settlement, that came to be known as French Lick, has metamorphosed in to a magnificent holiday resort with two world-class luxury hotels and a stunning Las Vegas-style casino.
There are so fun things to do here now that visitors will have a tough time in seeing them all. But they will have a gala time whatever they manage to do within a limited period of their holiday.
Things to do
There are indeed many things to do in this fascinating little town and exploring its picturesque countryside is great fun. Engage yourself in activities like golfing, swimming, fishing, hiking, skiing, ice-skating and visiting museums.
If you are a golf enthusiast you would like French Lick. Its rolling hills provide ample challenges to make this area a wonderful golf destination. There are three golf courses in and around the town: the 9-hole Valley Links and Golf Learning Center. Then there is the 18-hole Hill Course designed by the legendary Donald Ross, and the new Pete Dye Course that has been carved into the hillsides to create an exciting golf experience.
Enjoy train trip
Visit the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum and take their offer of a train journey pulled by a vintage diesel engine. You will enjoy being taken back to the golden era of the railways which, even if you hadn’t seen earlier, you would still enjoy the nostalgic journey through the picturesque Forest.
Visit the Railroad Museum either before or after your historic train journey. It contains vintage diesel electric locomotives, passenger compartments and those wonderful red cabooses, complete with kitchen and sleeping facilities for the train crew, which used to be attached at the end of a train.
Explore Historic Landmarks
French Lick Resort and West Baden Springs are magnificent hotels and both are French Lick’s historic landmarks and you would probably be staying in one of them.
Both offer over an hour’s guided tour when guides explain the buildings’ architecture, history and anecdotes about famous guests who stayed there before.
Have Fun with Water
The Big Splash Adventure Indoor Water Park & Resort, surrounded by 75 acres of wooded estate, is located just on the outskirts of French Lick. It’s enclosed in a glass structure and, therefore, offers exciting water adventure throughout the year.
More Fun with Water
You can even stay and play on the water. Come to Patoka Lake, stay on a houseboat or a floating cabin. Indulge in water-borne activities like fishing, swimming or simply spend your time enjoying the natural beauty and observing the wildlife.
Come to French Lick and enjoy whatever you do – including losing money occasionally at the Resort’s dazzling Las Vegas-style casino!
