This Is Salzburg

Salzburg, known as the chocolate box city, is near the German/Bavarian border. It is the fourth largest city and is the capital of the sate of Salzburg. The ‘Old Town’ with the world famous baroque architecture was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Salzburg or ‘Salt Castle’ gets its name from the barges ferrying salt in the Salzach river.

Getting There
The city is connected to Vienna and Munich by the autobahns. Driving within the city is not a pleasant experience. The road names are written in traditional German which is very difficult to read. The best way to see Salzburg is by foot.

The train station is located in the new town of Salzburg. There are trains from Munich that takes around 90 min and it is also well connected to international train stations in Zurich, Zagreb, Ljubljana and Budapest. The station needs renovation and there are ticket counters and automatic ticketing machines also. The rail pass can be bought from the DB ticket selling machines.

Salzburg W.A.Mozart International airport is situated 20 min from the city and connected to Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Brussels, Birmingham, Coventry, Exeter, London, Zurich et al.

The Untersberg – the mountain can be easily reached by bus and is hugely popular among tourists as the city of Salzburg is just 16 km away. There is a cable car which will lift you over 1300m to the Geiereck peak. The cable starts its journey from the St Leonhard station to the Geiereck peak.

Salzburg Zoo – the zoo serves south Salzburg and is open throughout the year. There is a petting zoo for the children too. The restaurant inside serves traditional Austrian dishes and the cost of entry is 8 Euros.

Toy Museum – The toy museum has the largest collection of toys in Austria. There is a puppet show at 3 pm on every tuesday and Wednesday. The entry fees are 2.70 Euros for adults and 0.80 Euros for the little angels.
