By on March 17, 2011

One of the very traditional, very beautiful places to visit in Italy is Venice. The capital of Veneto, it is a famous tourist spot as well as industrial site located to the northern part of Italy. Regarded by many as the most beautiful city in the world and an abode for romantic hearts, Venice always remains the most loved vacation spot.

The name Venice has an important historical significance, marking its traditional background too. There are controversies regarding the origin of Venice. While some sources say it was the home of several Roman refugees such as Padua, Aquileria, Treviso, Altino and the Concordia, who fled and settled in this region to rescue themselves from the successive Germanic and Hun invasions.

Other sources debate as during the time of Roman Empire the region was inhibited by a group of tribal people who were known as “Veneti” who were mainly fishermen and this lagoon area suited their professional needs well. Thus it has got its name “Venice”.

In recent times Venice has been referred to by a collection of names like “ City of Masks”, “City of Bridges”, The Floating City” “City of Canals”, “City of Water”, “Queen of Adriatic”, “Serenissima”, “La Dominante”, all owing of its geographical position, abundance of natural resources and splendid scenic beauty.

A cluster of 117 small islands forms the geographical feature of Venice, which ultimately stretches across the salty waters of the Venetian lagoon along the Adriatic Sea, along the shoreline between the mouths of Po and Piave Rivers.

Historically also, Venice is a rich city. The geographical position of Venice encouraged maritime trade since ancient times specially the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The major merchandise of trade was silks, spices and grains, which thus made Venice a wealthy city. Its cultural background also has the similar value, such as its undeniably important role in the birth of symphonic and operatic music.

Parallel with potential trade and commerce, Venice is also famous for its beautiful architecture and imagery in the form of beautiful palaces and marble structures the Grand Canal Palaces with exclusive marble churches and prayer halls. Venetian red-paintings, rich Venetian wine, beautiful and heart-rending music that breathe the 18th century tradition with a fusion of punk-rock bravado played in concerts are the attracting forces to the tourists.
