South Africa is located in southern Africa, stretching between the Indian ocean and the Atlantic ocean; sharing borders with Swaziland, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and engulfing Lesotho. The people of Xhosa, Sotho, Zulu, Asians and Dutch and British origin live here.
Official language is Afrikaans, and English. Johannesburg and Durban are the bigger cities. South Africa is one of the world’s leading producers of gold and diamond.
Highest elevation is Cathkin Peak at 3181m in the Drakensberg. Chief Rivers are Orange, Vaal, Limpopo, and Tugela. Bloemfontein, is the judicial capital; Pretoria, is the executive capital city and Cape Town, is the legislative capital of the nation.
Cape Town on the Table Mountain has lot of leisure activities for the tourists such as hiking, waterfronts, beaches, wine tours, and Nature reserves. Climate is subtropical maritime along the coast, dry, semi-desert and desert type in the interior.
The transport system is well developed and efficiently managed. Some railways are electrified, and there is a dense system of internal air routes. The country has several modern international airports.
Coastal and international shipping is very important, the largest port facilities being located in Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and East London.
The country is a high plateau descending into the Kalahari basin in the north. The Drakensberg Range stretches along the south-east. The plateau descends into the Great Karroo in the south-west. The desert and semi-desert areas are characterized by shrubs and succulents. Maritime areas and river valleys have a pleasant climate, fertile soils,and sufficient rainfall.
There are several national parks including the famous Kruger and Kalahari Gemsbok, which is set apart for the protection of the indigenous wildlife, for example the zebra, antelope, giraffe, ostrich, baboon, and rhinoceros. A 3000 km. long coastline is full of beaches, accommodation, golf estates, and the fishing community.
Aviary abounds in the forested area and is a joy to watch. The more adventurous dare to Bungi Jump at Bloukrans River Bridge. Cango Caves, situated at Swartberg Mountain Range are the Cango caves dating back to antiquity.
