Zoo Negara is one of the highly acclaimed zoos of the world. The zoo covers a huge area of 110 acres and is only 5km from the lovely city of Kuala Lumpur. The Zoo Negara follows an open concept zoo and 90% of the animals are in exhibits which have a large space and resemble their natural habitats very closely. It has more than 5400 specimens of mammals, birds, reptiles etc.
Opening Hours
The zoo is open daily from 9:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the evening. The entrance fees for foreigners are RM 35 and for children below 12 years it is RM 18. This price includes the entrance fees to the Insect Zoo & Butterfly Park.
Getting There
The Zoo Negara is actually located in Selangor. You can hop on the LRT in KL and get down at Wangsa Maju Station. From there you can take a taxi to Zoo Negara. If you want to travel by bus then hop on Metrobus No. 16 from Central Market in Kuala Lumpur.
Food & Souvenir Kiosk
The Wild Restaurant is a family eatery that is located inside the zoo. The menu is extensive and the food is available at very cheap rates. The Wall’s Café specializes in Western cuisine and a variety of ice creams. If you are looking for unique gifts, then head towards Kancil Souvenir Shop for a lovely range of souvenirs.
Facilities
There is an AC prayer room situated near the main entrance of the zoo. There are also a number of Zoo huts strewn around for you and your family to take a break. There are some AC ones too; so look out for those ones.
Show Times
The Multi Animal Show, as the name suggests, is a fun show involving the Sea Lions, Macaques and Macaws. The show is held daily at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. You can even take a picture with these animals after the show gets over.
Exhibits
There are many exhibits at Zoo Negara to keep you busy throughout the day. The Insect Zoo is a unique exhibit that captures the beautiful world of the butterflies. The exhibit is the biggest in SE Asia. The Amphibian World displays the different types of amphibians found in Malaysia. It is located inside the Reptile House. The other interesting exhibits of the zoo would be Hornbill Center, Malaysian Elephants, Lake Birds, Bird Aviary etc.
